Hermo mosquito repellent – An indigenous, all natural repellent developed in India

S Prabakaran, a young innovator from the little village of Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu, has launched Hermo mosquito repellent – a herbal mosquito repellant under the emblem title of ‘Hermo’ that comes as an alternate to the chemical founded creams, fluid vaporizers, and coils in the market.

Hermo, a water-based natural formulation comprising of extracts of herbs, is used as a body spray. Hermo has obtained a good response from the market as it is free from chemicals. Introduced in the market in January, a 100 ml bottle of Hermo is costed at Rs.70. The merchandise is actually accessible in six localities; Trichy, Thanjavur, Chennai, Coimbatore, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam. Each 100 ml container of Hermo comprises cymbopogan citrates (lemon grass) 6ml, Cymbopogon martini (Indian geranium or rose lawn) 1.5 ml, Azadirachta indica (neem) 2ml, Ocimum sanctum and (Tulasi) 0.5 ml.

“Hermo has been found productive in repelling mosquitoes. It is completely protected, and certified as non-allergic and non-toxic. “Siddha and Ayurveda doctors are prescribing it to their patients,” states 22-year-old Prabakaran, who accomplished his B. Tech in biotechnology from Periyar Maniammai University (PMU) in Thanjavur last year.

An incubator at Periyar TBI (Technology enterprise Incubator), a junction initiative of PMU and Ministry of research & expertise, Government of India, Prabakaran begun work on the product when he was in second year B. Tech.

Although, there was a dramatic turning issue in his life.

The herbal mosquito repellant concept, he states, came to him in a flash when he was dragged up for chatting in class. “There was an upcoming science carnival and our department head was seeking project ideas from scholars. I was engrossed in a conversation with a classmate. “Suddenly the lecturer yelled at me and asked me what I was doing when every person additional was giving proposals. “Just then the young female I was conversing to swatted a mosquito sitting on her hand and I blurted out, ‘Sir, I design to make a herbal mosquito repellant.’ “My professor, E Ve Raa, took it seriously and made me work on the task from that very day. We conceived a raw formulation with extracts from eucalyptus departs and other herbs.”

At the science festival in Coimbatore, inquisitive visitors picked up some packets of their ‘herbal mosquito repellant,’ which was traded at Rs.50 per packet.

“People were captivated to the herbal label. Occurrence of dengue high temperature at that time furthermore contributed to the sale,” says Prabakaran. Prabakaran recognized the demand for such a merchandise in the market and considered in developing it further. Shortly they were able to develop a commercially viable merchandise.

“Hermo is a exclusive merchandise. It is herbal founded, it desires no power to work, and it does not let out fumes. I accept as true it is a timely launch and the product will do well in the market,” states A P Aruna, CEO, Periyar TBI, and Prabakaran’s direct.

Meantime, demand for Hermo is gradually picking up. Around 1000 – 1500 bottles are being traded every month now. Prabakaran states an agency is negotiating for marketing privileges for the merchandise and is involved in procuring 20000 bottles directly from him every month.
His enterprise has supplied occupations for 4 persons already, but he hopes to conceive 50,000 occupations and go in at smallest 4 nations by 2020.
